this is yet again totally amazing shyte, the guys never stop coming up with something different! be warned tho, the cd is not technically flawless (2nd track sound level is lower than the rest and there is a rather nasty glitch near to the end of it)

This is in italian. I'm sorry, but I can't translate it now. Nuovo viaggio in casa Arcturus, nuovo sogno raccontato dalla band norvegese che, mai come oggi, è una delle poche espressioni in campo musicale ancora capace di sorprendere. Ciò che gli Arcturus hanno fatto è stato andare avanti per la propria strada riuscendo nell'impossibile impresa di superare il passato più recente (The Sham Mirrors), avendo ben presente nella mente quella che è una vetta mai più ripetibile per le più svariate circostanze (La Masquerade Infernale), mantenendo i contatti con un aspro passato, ma, allo stesso tempo, mirando solo al futuro: tutto questo è Sideshow Symphonies, un album tutt'altro che semplice, ma che pone la semplicità (formale) alla sua base. Perché è da un'apparente semplicità a livello di composizioni corredata da un reale snellimento a livello di strutture che partono le sinfonie del dietro le quinte, meno interessanti ad un primo impatto, cucite addosso all' "alien traslator" Vortex e incredibilmente vicine per la loro linearità ad Aspera Hiems Symfonia. Ed è terribile l'iniziale accostarsi ad una creatura del genere, assolutamente insoddisfacente perché misto ad una mancanza di volontà di accettare un tale cambiamento che non conosce pari. Ma la prima impressione spesso è molto più che fuorviante e lentamente queste sinuose sinfonie riescono a mostrare il lato più intenso di questa narrazione onirica: infatti il racconto di un sogno di primo acchito può sembrare di facile interpretazione, ma quando si comincia a mostrare più attenzione per i particolari si capisce che le sue mille sfaccettature nascoste sono ben più di piccoli abbellimenti. Così si rimane intrappolati tra le tastiere cariche di effetti che rendono "Ibernation Sickness Complete" assolutamente impedibile e si rimane sorpresi di fronte ad un Vortex in stato di grazia che torna in questo brano a sfoggiare un eccellente screaming. Ma le sorprese non finiscono e gli strati emozionali che compongono Sideshow Symphonies cominciano a mostrarsi sempre più ai nostri occhi, partendo dalle struggenti vocals femminili di "Shipwrecked Frontier Pioneer" fino a giungere al rutto che cesella le suadenti trame tastieristiche che aprono "Deamon Painter". Riuscire a fare un viaggio al contrario sentendo spunti figli de La Masquerade Infernale che si fondono con i suoni "spaziali" di The Sham Mirrors e l'irruenza di Aspera Hiems Symfonia, sognare ad occhi aperti venendo rapiti da un "mostro di rumore bianco" e trovarsi a danzare sotto un "Moonshine Delirium"; riuscire a ricordare i Borknagar di The Archaic Course in "Nocturnal Vision Revisited" (sarà un caso?) e comprendere che nonostante le influenze brani come "Evacuation Code Deciphered" e "Hufsa" sono il chiaro segno di una band con un sound originale, personale e unico. Unico, come un gruppo che oggi smette i panni di "folle progetto" per diventare band a tutti gli effetti e che riesce anche con questa veste a sorprendere come e più di prima restando quella "beautiful lonely star" che abbiamo amato, amiamo e sempre ameremo. Moonshine Delirium

Once more Norway's finest have delivered an trademark unpredictable album. This is definitly their most difficult album to approach as they have now slowly but surely left their black metal past behind them. In a way this album could be seen as a blend of La Masquarade Infernale for its operatic, theatrical and dark approach and The Sham Mirrors for the modern, electronic and bombastic aspect. The lyrics are rather obscure, relating some king of futuristic space journey, as also seen on the artwork -though I have not yet been studying them thoroughly-. I had doubts on Vortex's abbility to fill in the gap left by former singer Garm but I must say that I have been very plesently surprised by his vocals. He sings in an operatic way as he did in Dimmu Borgir but this time there is much more to it than with the latter. The way he sings sometimes reminds me of Bjork (!) and the overall result is more then acceptable. This new album is also filled with beautyfull keaboard and piano riffs giving probably even more depth than in the precedent opuses. Hellhammer's drumming is not spectacular as some might expect but precise and appropriate. The same could probabily be said regarding the guitar parts. The overall result of the album is very syphonic and theatrical and though it lacks of any surprising bits such as one could find on The Sham Mirrors -that brilliant ambient break on Nightmare Heaven- classy Arcturus have once more delivered a masterpiece.
